Day 4 / 40 Grateful Days

Day 4 / 40 Grateful Days

Drove out to the Outer Banks, specifically Kill Devil Hills, for the Wright Brothers Memorial.  Wiley needed to visit a historical site for his Citizenship in the Nation merit badge.  Started off at 6:30am as it is a 3 hour drive.  Two hours in we made our first rest stop as we approached the inner banks, and just shortly before that we saw a teenaged(?) black bear run across 4 lanes Highway 64 E right in front of us!  So we had to pose by the black bear signs at that rest stop / visitor area to commemorate.   We stayed at the Wright Brothers Memorial for over 2 hours.  It was hot (95?), but we stuck it out and walked the first flight strip area, and up "Big Kill Devil Hill" to see the monument.  After that we walked back down and enjoyed the air conditioned museum, listening to a Ranger give a talk in front of a Flyer replica. Stew earned a Junior Ranger pin for answering an obscure trivia question right "What was the first business Wright Brothers started together?" (a newspaper) since he had just been googling them before the talk started (to see how Wilbur died).
After a too-big lunch at a too-busy Five Guys Burgers & Fries we headed south about 20 minutes to the Bodie Island Lighthouse.  We think we've been there before with Mom, Dad and Cathy way back before Wiley was even born.  Finally we headed across the highway from the lighthouse to the Coquina Beach public beach access, which had a nice bathhouse and outdoor shower area. The beach was steeper and more sea weedy than the Topsail Island beach we usually go to (which is an hour closer), but Stew said it was nicer for hanging out past the breakers. We headed back around 5 and stopped in Greenville for some frozen yogurt, putting us home by 9.  Was a fun day!
